Teaching Smalltalk at Carleton University Through the Years

David has been teaching Smalltalk for almost as long as he’s been programming Smalltalk. In 1993, he joined The Object People and began teaching their Introduction to Smalltalk courses. Later as president of Simberon Incorporated, he developed his own Smalltalk courses and delivered those for many years.

In this talk, David describes what it was like teaching Smalltalk in the early days and today. How have things changed and how have they stayed the same?  He tells war stories from teaching Smalltalk courses: Tag team instructing; the funniest questions and the hardest questions; looking for the red screens; heretical teaching moments; the “aha” moment; favourite Smalltalk sayings; the best mistakes. Come hear what it’s like teaching and learning a “radical” language.
